Brompton Lineup Summary – Before and After 2022

When you try to buy a Brompton, you realize that there are various types of products.
If you are searching for a Brompton for the first time, it can be difficult to know what products are available.
Let’s take a look at the differences between the various lineups.

Bromptons after 2022 have a total of five lineups: A, C, P, T, and Electirc lines.
But before 2022, it wasn’t like this.
So, if you look at used items for sale in a second-hand market, read the M type, S type, etc., and go to the “Brompton” homepage (link), you will find that there are no such products.

old brompton lineup

In the old Brompton, the shape and height of the handlebars were a big distinguishing factor. So, it was classified as follows.

S type

The S type is Brompton’s most basic model, featuring a sporty design and straight handlebars.
The current name is Low handlebar, and the height of the handlebar is 925mm.

M type

The M type has a slightly taller handlebar than the S type, providing a more comfortable ride.
The current name is Mid handlebar, and the height of the handlebar is 1015mm.

H type

The H type uses a higher handlebar than the M type, allowing you to ride in a more upright position.
The current name is Hi handlebar, and the height of the handlebar is 1075mm.

P type

The P type is a handle bar that is curved like a drop bar, and can be held at the bottom or top. The position height of the top grip is 1030mm.

This handlebar is no longer available for purchase.

How to identify the current Brompton lineup

These days, the Brompton lineup does not distinguish in the form of handlebars as above.
The current P type has nothing to do with the old P type.
Consumers can be confused.
So let’s take a look at the current lineup classification.

Brompton’s lineup currently has an A/C/P/T line in its regular lineup and a C/P line in its electric bikes.
So the shape of the handlebar can be chosen by the consumer within the line. (The choices are limited.)

Brompton A Line

The Brompton A line is a product with very simple and minimal elements.
So the price is also the cheapest.
If you plan to do a lot of customization, it is also good to use this as a base for custom tuning.
There is only one color, white, as a sign of simplicity.
The gear uses the built-in 3-speed.
The handlebar is also only available as a mid handlebar and weighs 11.5 kg.

Brompton C Line

You can think of it as Brompton’s popular line. You can consider it original.
The C line is divided into “Urban” / “Utility” / “Explore” three types depending on the transmission type.
Let’s see what difference it makes.

C Line – “Urban”

The “Urban” line has a two-speed external gear. what can i do with 2nd gear? You may say, but if you ride in an environment without uphill, you can use it quite usefully. Instead of giving up going up hills, you can get lighter weights.
Because it has 12 or 16 teeth, it can give 133% gear ratio change.

C Line – “Utility”

The “Utility” line has built-in 3 gears. Because it can change the gear ratio of 177%, it is a gear that is more useful for climbing rather than for changing riding modes on flat terrain.

C Line – “Explore”

The “Explore” line has a total of 6 gears as gears with 2 external gears and 3 internal gears.

So “Urban” is the lightest at 11.26kg.
Next comes the “Utility” line at 11.8kg and the heaviest is “Explore” at 12.11kg.

Brompton P Line (“Urban”)

The P line can be seen as a Brompton that is lighter and has better speed.
In the P line, there is “Urban” as a sub-lineup.
It’s a bit confusing, but there is only one “Urban” lineup.

In the P line, the weight of the frame is reduced by 700g by using a titanium material for the fork part that holds the rear and front wheels of the frame. And by improving the suspension rubber more firmly, it reduces the power loss of pedaling.

And the P line uses an external 4th gear. This 4th gear provides a gear width almost equal to the overall gear width of the built-in 3rd gear, but allows tighter gear changes. Besides, it’s lighter.

Because it uses a 4-speed gear, it is also characterized by using a more improved and stiffer wheelset and hub accordingly.
And if the C line had to use a monkey wrench to separate the wheel set, the P line has a great advantage that the wheel can be easily separated with a hexagonal wrench.
It weighs 9.99 kg. I can feel the desire to fit within 10 kg.

Brompton T Line

The T-line is a bike whose entire frame is made of titanium.
So, the total weight is 7.45kg / 7.95kg, which is very very light.

The T line has two sub-lineups. One is “One” and the other is “Urban”.

T Line – “One”

The “One” line is a bike built for minimal weight.
There is only one gear. In fact, if you only ride riverside bike paths, you’ll be fine with just one gear. Of course, you may change your mind if you are hit by a headwind, but if you choose a somewhat compromised gear, you will be fully rewarded with the sensibility that comes from the clean appearance with the shift system removed.
Plus, it’s nice to have fewer elements to maintain.
This single gear system makes the Brompton “One” by reducing the weight to 7.45 kg.

T Line – “Urban”

The “Urban” line is a model with an external 4-speed gearbox.
So, it weighs 7.49kg, which is a bit heavier than “One”, but it is possible to ride for life, ride for strength training, and do long-distance touring.

Brompton Electric Bike C Line

The electric C line is literally the C line with the function of an electric bike.
However, unlike the C line above, there are only two sub-lineups: “Urban” and “Explore”.

Electric C Line – “Urban”

It is an electric bicycle with external 2 gears.
It weighs 16.6kg.

Electric C Line – “Explore”

It is an electric bike with 6 gears.
3 inside and 2 outside. The total weight is 17.4 kg.

Brompton Electric Bike P Line (“Urban”)

P Line This is a line with electric bicycle function added to the Brompton.
It weighs 15.6 kg and has the same 4-speed external gear as the P line.
In the same way that the P line has only one “Urban”, there is only one “Urban” for electric bicycles.

Brompton electric bikes are characterized by very easy battery removal.

Since the battery can be easily removed as above, the weight of the bike itself does not increase significantly, so it seems easy to lift.

conclusion

General Bromptons (not electric bikes) have a lineup of major categories of A, C, P, and T. Except for the special edition.
The A-Line is a very basic built-in 3-speed single white mid handlebar.
The C line is original and can be selected from external 2-speed, internal 3-speed, and 6-speed, and you can also select low, mid, and high handlebars.
The P line is a model with a slight weight reduction and transmission improvement, and is an external 4-speed model.
The T-line is the lightest and most expensive titanium model. And you can choose the single gear One line and the 4th gear “Urban”.
